ResumoThe wettability of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) was systematically studied using water by sessile-drop method for films grown with different concentration of methane addition in the Ar/CH4/H2 mixtures. The films showed a grain size decrease from 8.5 to 4.0 nm associated to a contact angle decrease from 97 to 80°, as the methane concentration increased from 0.5 to 2.0 vol.%. These results is depicted in Figs. 1a and 1b. Taking into account that the wettability evolution is only due to a chemical surface modification, it could be reasonably proposed that the progressive loss of the hydrophobic character is linked to the progressive conversion of surface terminations from C-H to COOH. This result is coherent with the observed from XPS spectra, where the amount of carbon decreased while the oxygen content increased from 5 to 12% as the methane concentration increased. As the presence of heteroatoms, especially oxygen groups, affects the electrochemical response of the carbon materials in two different ways. On the one hand oxygen groups may determine the wettability by the electrolyte solution. Secondaly, the increase in oxygen content modifies the electrostatic field in the surface, imparting certain polarity, which makes easier the interaction with water molecules. This behavior was also observed from the cyclic voltammetry analyses of these films.
